"Holland's 52-Goal Blitz Wins UEFA Player of the Year, Tops Messi."

Erling Haaland, who shone in the Premier League during the 2022-23 season at the age of 22, overtook 36-year-old Lionel Messi to claim the honor of Europe's best player. The award ceremony was held by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in Monaco, France, at 1:00 a.m. local time on January 1, followed by a group draw to determine the UEFA Champions League groupings for the 2023-24 season.

At the ceremony, Miroslav Klose received the UEFA President's Award for the German striker's outstanding performances at the 2002 World Cup in Korea-Japan and the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he scored five goals each. In addition, the UEFA Coach of the Year award went to Manchester City's Pep Guardiola, who led the team to a magnificent treble. In the current season, City is aiming to win both the league and the Champions League.

However, the most talked about player was Erling Haaland, who was voted UEFA Player of the Year. Harland scored an astonishing 36 goals in 35 games in his first season in the Premier League. If you consider the whole season, he scored a whopping 52 goals. Harland rose to prominence in the Premier League with a reputation as a goal-scoring machine, thus earning him the Player of the Year award.

Harland's award beat out two other candidates, including Lionel Messi, 36, who won his first individual title at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and Kevin De Bruyne, 32. Although Messi was honored for winning the World Cup, he seems unable to match Harland's performance in Europe.

These winners were voted on by a voting panel that included the head coaches competing in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and European competitions, the UEFA national team coaches, and journalists selected by the European sports media.

The UEFA Award winners are listed below:

UEFA President's Award: Miroslav Klose
UEFA Coach of the Year (Men): Pep Guardiola
UEFA Coach of the Year (Women): Sarina Wiegman
UEFA Player of the Year (men): Erling Haaland
UEFA Player of the Year (Women): Aitana Bonmati
